Minaret de la mosquée Kaylan
Sunday, August 19th. There is some change in Bukhara since my previous visit. Three quarters of tapshans around the Liab-i-Hauz pond disappeared. When I pointed out to the boy of the hotel, he says that the President had decided to do so. There are also regular pavements in the streets where are the tourist monuments. Unfortunately, it is impossible now to climb into the old metallic water tower in front of Ark. But there are the very beautiful sites of the Po-i-Kalan complex, the Kukeldash and Nadir Divan-Begi Madrasah, Char Minar, the Bolo Hauz Mosque and many other mosques and madrasahs throughout the popular districts and that we discover during the stroll. Streets are lined with workshops, chaïkhani and specialized shops. Urban mixing is the charm of Bukhara. Without forgetting the pond of Lab-i Hauz, privileged meeting place for Bukharians. We meet in at the evening, installed on tapshans or sitting on low walls, we discuss and drink tea, the children are playing not far, the water's murmur accompanies the rumbling. I would also add that Bukhara is the city of scholars, poets and writers as the scholar and encyclopaedist Abu'Ali Ibn Sina (Avicenna), the poet Rudaki and Al-Biruni, one of the most eminent scholars of medieval Islam. Nevertheless, the true star of Bukhara, it is this ridiculous personage with a malicious smile which, perched on his bronze donkey next to the pond, shows a coin.
